Photos of the Kodiak baer (Ursus arctos middendorfi) and a bear family fishing for salmon in the river and in the close bush ashore
Along the coast of Alaska, the animals are called “Alaskan Brown Bear”.
These coastal Brown Bears are found on the Alaskan Peninsula and along the Pacific coast to British Columbia.
A subspecies of the Brown Bears lives on Kodiak; their name is Ursus arctos middendorffi. Due to the mild climate on the beautiful island of Kodiak off the south-west coast of Alaska and the rich stock of salmon in the rivers, the Kodiak Bears have optimal living conditions.
A lot of rain takes care of an abundant vegetationwhich is welcome to the bears when there is eventually no salmon. Then they live on vegetable food until the next salmon migration.
It is not surprising that the largest Brown Bears - with a weight of up to 800 kilograms and erect with a height of up to three metres - live here.
We were able to watch the Kodiak Bears extensively at the O’Malley River
and the Little River Lake.
Together with the Polar Bears they are considered the largest land predators.
Unfortunately, it rained almost all the time and the weather conditions were so bad that our bush plane couldn’t pick us up until three days later than scheduled.
