Photos of the Red-tailed tropicbird (Phaeton rubricauda) on the ground and flying over the Midway Atoll/Hawaii.Young-bird pictures can also be seen.
The snow-white, elegant Red-tailed Tropicbirds (Phaethon rubicauda)
with their bright red bills and tails are extraordinarily impressive against the deep blue
Midway sky.
They are flying artists and their acrobatic flights are unexcelled.
Ashore, however, they are rather clumsy, due to their extremely short legs. Red-tailed Tropicbirds breed on the ground, and on Midway they are not shy at all. The largest breeding colony of Red-tailed Tropicbirds on the Hawaiian Islands – approximately 5,000 pairs – is located on Midway. Between February and August they nest on the ground of the Midway Islands.
