Approximately 50,000 Sooty Tern pairs (Sterna fuscata) nest on Eastern and Spit Island/Midway Atoll/Hawaii. The birds nest in a large colony.
The female lays a single egg in the sand or on the hard runway surface of Eastern Island (a remnant of World War II) After fledging, the Sooty Terns stay above the sea for up to three years without interruptions. Their only possibility to rest are driftwood or sleeping turtles on the sea surface.
The birds are excellent hunters.
