Aerial Photo of Harbour Construction in Richards Bay, Natal, South Africa (00092510)
Description: The aerial photo depicts the harbour of Richards Bay in Natal, South Africa, during its construction phase. The harbour was built in a natural lagoon, dredged to an impressive water depth of 23 meters. To make room for the harbour expansion, half of the lagoon had to be altered, while the other half was preserved as a nature reserve. Two massive breakwaters protect the harbour from the strong tides of the Indian Ocean. The aerial photo also showcases the imposing quay walls designed to accommodate ships for loading and unloading. A section of the harbour is specifically dedicated to the export of South African coal. The surrounding nature with its rich fauna and flora creates a fascinating juxtaposition between man and nature.
