African penguin (Spheniscus demersus) on Dyer Island, South Africa

Description: The African penguin (Spheniscus demersus) is an endangered species found on Dyer Island off the coast of the Western Cape in South Africa. The island is a protected habitat where African penguins and rare seabirds breed. The remnants of a former guano station on the island bear witness to a dark past when penguins were hunted for their oil. Thankfully, these practices have ceased, and the population of African penguins is slowly recovering. Today, Dyer Island and its unique flora and fauna are fully protected.
