Bull Shark in extremely shallow water at Walker's Cay (00003166)
Description: The Bull Shark (Carcharhinus leucas) can be seen in extremely shallow water at Walker's Cay. Along with the Tiger Shark and the White Shark, the Bull Shark is considered one of the 'dangerous sharks'. It prefers shallow waters near the coast and in river estuaries. Here, in the shallow-water area, underwater visibility is severely limited by sand swirls, even with low swell. In estuaries where fresh and saltwater mix, visibility is always poor. During my three-year stay in Richards Bay/Zululand/Natal, I heard of many accidents involving the Zambezi Shark, as the Bull Shark is known in this region. A unique feature of the Bull Shark is its ability to thrive in freshwater. In Africa, Central America, and South America, it is found deep within lakes and rivers. The Bull Shark is a sturdy heavyweight (reaching lengths of up to 3.5 meters and weighing over 200 kilograms) and inhabits tropical and subtropical waters worldwide. It has a low flight distance and approaches divers directly and confidently. Bull Sharks feed on mollusks, rays, crustaceans, bony fish, and even other sharks.
