Fascinating Sight: The Great White Shark and the Fur Seals near Gansbaai (00010552)

Description: The majestic Great White Shark (Carcharodon carcharias) swims purposefully near Geyser Rock and Dyer Island off the coast of South Africa. This area is home to a variety of marine life including African penguins, cormorants, and a large colony of South African fur seals (Arctocephalus pusillus). As the king of the seas, the Great White Shark plays a crucial role in the marine ecosystem. Recent research suggests that these fascinating creatures not only inhabit coastal areas but also undertake long migrations. Their behaviors and habitats remain largely mysterious. Existing virtually unchanged for millions of years, the Great White Shark is perfectly adapted to its environment. Unfortunately, the population of these impressive animals is rapidly declining.
