Young Great White shark is extremely cautious and avoids adult sharks (00015531)
Description: The young Great White shark, scientifically known as Carcharodon carcharias, is seen moving near the water surface six sea miles off the coast of Gansbaai, close to Dyer Island and Gyser Rock. Great White sharks are fully developed from birth and are self-sufficient. Their diet mainly consists of smaller fish and squids. Young sharks are extremely cautious and immediately disappear when an adult shark appears. Only a few of them reach adulthood, but if they manage to survive, they evolve into the dominant hunters of the sea. As apex predators, Great White sharks are crucial for maintaining the ecological balance in the ocean. Despite having few natural predators (except for Killer whales), they are heavily endangered mainly due to human activities.
