Stormy Atlantic off Cape Agulhas: A Spectacular Natural Phenomenon (00011344)
Description: The stormy Atlantic off the southern tip of Africa, Cape Agulhas, is notorious for sudden storms with hurricane-force winds and high waves. During many visits to this region, I have encountered storms with impressive wave heights of up to eight meters. Sometimes, I had to wait for up to ten days until the storm subsided and it was safe to venture out. The waters around Cape Agulhas are teeming with fish, but also treacherous due to the many reefs along the inhospitable coastline. It is estimated that since the 17th century, around 140 ships have sunk in the 'Graveyard of Ships.'
