Stormy Sea at the Southern Tip of Africa - Hurricane Storms and High Waves (00011359)

Stormy Sea at the Southern Tip of Africa

Description: The stormy sea at the southern tip of Africa is notorious for sudden hurricane-force storms with high waves. During numerous visits, I have encountered storms with wave heights of up to eight meters. Sometimes I had to wait for days until the storm subsided and it was safe to venture out. The waters around Cape Agulhas are rich in fish, but due to the many reefs and inhospitable coastline, they are very dangerous for shipping. It is estimated that around 140 ships have sunk in the 'Graveyard of Ships' since the 17th century.
