Fascinating African Penguins and rare seabirds on the protected Dyer Island in South Africa (00000606)

African Penguin with chick on the protected Dyer Island in South Africa

Description: The African Penguin, also known as the Blackfooted Penguin or Spheniscus demersus, is nesting with its chick on Dyer Island. In addition to penguins, the island is home to rare seabirds. Tragic relics from the past, such as ruins of a guano station, serve as reminders of the time when seal hunters and penguin harvesters roamed the island. The population of African Penguins in South Africa has declined significantly, but conservation efforts under the Washington Agreement and the protection of Dyer Island have helped preserve the local wildlife.
