Two Great White Sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) have followed the appetising intensity of the scent, reaching their target. Patiently circling the bait, they familiarise with the situation. (00010462)

Great White Sharks on Patrol

Description: Great White Sharks on Patrol. Two Great White Sharks are cruising the waters near Geyser Rock and Dyer Island off the coast of South Africa. Home to African penguins, cormorants, many other seabirds, and a large colony of South African fur seals (Arctocephalus pusillus). The apex predator Great White Shark plays a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance in the ocean. Recent research suggests that Great White Sharks not only inhabit coastal areas but also undertake long migrations. Very little is known about their behavior and habitat. The Great White Shark has remained virtually unchanged for millions of years, perfectly adapted to its environment. The population of Great White Sharks has declined significantly worldwide. In September 2002, they were finally protected as an endangered species. Only time will tell if this measure is not too late.
