Description: The Great White Shark (Carcharodon carcharias) is a fascinating predatory fish species that inhabits the waters around Geyser Rock near Dyer Island. This region is home to a large seal colony that is visited annually by these majestic predators. The seals are well aware of the danger posed by the Great Whites and try to avoid encounters. The interactions between the seals and sharks are particularly intense when the seals swim out to sea for fishing and have to navigate the dangerous waters where the Great Whites lurk. These sharks have a special affinity for fur seals, and the concentration in this region is remarkable.
