Fascinating Great White Shark and the Seal Colony of Geyser Rock (00014530)

Fascinating Great White Shark near Geyser Rock

Description: The Great White Shark, also known as Carcharodon carcharias, is a majestic creature of the oceans. Near Geyser Rock, close to Dyer Island in the Western Cape, South Africa, there is an impressive colony of South African Fur Seals. Every winter, large Great White Sharks gather in this region to hunt their preferred prey. The seals are aware of the danger and avoid encounters with the sharks as long as they stay close to the island. However, on their way to forage in the open sea, they must pass through a dangerous zone where the Great Whites lurk. The presence of the sharks is closely linked to the seal colony, and hunting the fur seals holds a special significance for them.
