Fascinating Encounter: Great White Shark on Geyser Rock (00015434)

Great white shark approaching the seal colony on Geyser Rock

Description: The Great White Shark (Carcharodon carcharias) is a legendary sea predator that inhabits Geyser Rock near Dyer Island. The large seal colony on the rocky island attracts big Great White Sharks every winter, as they prey on seals. The seals are well aware of the danger and try to avoid encounters with the sharks. This habitat provides the sharks with perfect hunting grounds, especially when the seals venture out into the open sea. The high concentration of Great White Sharks in this area is directly linked to the presence of the seal colony.
