Description: The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is a fascinating predator, nearly extinct in Asia and facing severe threats in Africa. With its long legs, the cheetah is the fastest land animal on earth. This portrait captures a young cheetah in captivity, taken at the Hoedspruit Research & Breeding Centre in the Kapama Private Game Reserve. This facility cares for both bred cheetahs and those rescued from farmers, preparing them for eventual release back into the wild.
