Majestic African Elephant drinking at a river (00016143)
Description: The majestic African Elephant (Loxodonta africana africana) is the largest land mammal on Earth. Here, you can see an adult elephant quenching its thirst at a river. Elephants are herbivores and can consume up to 200 kg of leaves, twigs, roots, and fruits daily. These fascinating animals are classified into two subspecies: the savanna elephant and the forest elephant. The savanna elephant, as depicted here, inhabits dry forests and savannas in Africa, reaching a shoulder height of nearly three meters and weighing up to 7.5 tons. Despite international bans on ivory trade, African elephants are still threatened by habitat loss, mainly due to the expansion of agricultural areas.
