Photo of the Barbary Lion (Panthera leo leo) (00011770)
Description: The Barbary Lion (Panthera leo leo) is known for its striking appearance. This majestic animal once roamed the Atlas Mountains of North Africa before becoming extinct in the wild in 1910. However, there are still a few remaining specimens of this fascinating big cat, found in zoos and with private owners. Successful breeding programs have led to the preservation of the species, although modern Barbary Lions are no longer purebred.
