Barbary lion extinct in the wild

Description: The Barbary lion (Panthera leo leo) was a magnificent creature that once roamed the Atlas Mountains in North Africa. Sadly, the species became extinct in the wild in 1910. Today, only a few specimens of these captivating animals remain in captivity, in zoos and with private individuals. Despite successful breeding programs, the Barbary lions found in zoos and breeding centers are no longer purebred.
