Description: The Barbary lion (Panthera leo leo) was a majestic sight in North Africa, particularly in the Atlas Mountains. These fascinating big cats have been extinct in the wild since 1910, but a few individuals can still be found in zoos and conservation centers. The impressive mane of the Barbary lion was a distinctive feature that set them apart from other lion species. Despite successful breeding programs, the modern Barbary lions found in zoos and breeding centers are no longer purebred.
