Golden Cape Cobra at the base of an impressive rock wall

Description: The Golden Cape Cobra (Naja nivea) is a fascinating venomous snake that we encountered on a remote mountainside. In the midst of the impressive Overberg Fynbos area, a colorful group of rocks stood out, basking in the sunlight. This species of snake comes in various color variations, such as the yellow 'Yellow variety' and the speckled 'Speckled variety'. The Golden Cape Cobra, also known as the Yellow variety, emerged from its hiding spot. Measuring up to 1.60 meters in length with large, round pupils, it is a sight to behold. Its habitat includes dry, rocky areas as well as sandy riverbanks. When threatened, the Cape Cobra displays an impressive threat display. Its venom is among the most potent of African cobra species and has a neurotoxic effect. A bite can lead to death in humans within minutes. Small animals are defenseless against the Cape Cobra's venom.
