Description: The port of Richards Bay in Natal, South Africa, is known for the harsh conditions on the North Breakwater. The swell waves on the east coast of South Africa are of enormous size and can grow to impressive heights. The breakwaters at this location are among the strongest in the world, and even the maritime handbook warns of their power. This impressive natural spectacle can be observed throughout the year. Often, the waves crash up to the crane and can even reach the Manitowoc crane operator's cabin. When the wind becomes so strong that the crane cannot rotate and the crane operator feels like he is underwater, the Manitowoc must be moved back to a safe area.
