Dramatic Surf at the North Breakwater in Richards Bay, South Africa (00092196)

Threatening Surf at the North Breakwater

Description: The Richards Bay Harbour in Natal, South Africa, is renowned for its heavy surf conditions at the North Breakwater. The swell waves on the east coast can grow to enormous heights, making it one of the most dangerous surf areas on earth. Even the maritime handbook strongly warns against these breakers. This impressive phenomenon occurs throughout the year, with waves occasionally reaching up to the cranes and even the operator cabins. In strong winds, the Manitowoc 4600 crane must be moved to a safe area to avoid the risk of submersion.
