South African Fur Seal Heading to the Open Sea (00016584)
Description: The South African Fur Seal (Arctocephalus pusillus) resides on the rocky island of Geyser Rock near Dyer Island. This seal colony consists of approximately 60,000 animals. While the seals are safe on land and in shallow waters, they have to navigate through a dangerous zone when heading to the open sea, as White Sharks lurk in the area. These seals dive up to 50 meters deep and can stay underwater for up to five minutes. The danger is only averted once they safely return to land. The high concentration of Great White Sharks in the vicinity is attributed to the seal colony.
