In plankton-rich waters, the Great White Shark (Carcharodon carcharias) looks out for seals (00016509)
Description: Great White Shark/Carcharodon carcharias surrounded by plankton. On Geyser Rock, near Dyer Island, there is a colony of seals of about 60,000 animals. Every winter, large Great White Sharks arrive in this coastal region to hunt their favorite prey, the South African Fur Seals. The seals know that the Great White Shark is a feared hunter and avoid any encounter with it as much as possible. As long as they stay on land and in shallow water near the island, there is no danger for them. However, when they venture out into the plankton-rich waters for their fishing expeditions to the open sea, they must cross a danger zone that is challenging. Here, the Great White Sharks lurk. The Fur Seals are of special importance to them. Only when the seals return to land after their fishing trips, the danger is over. The high concentration of Great White Sharks is due to the seal colony.
