Majestic Great White Shark off the coast of South Africa (00010443)

Great White Shark rises vertically towards the bait

Description: The majestic Great White Shark, also known as Carcharodon carcharias, gracefully navigates the waters near Geyser Rock and Dyer Island off the coast of South Africa. This area is home to a variety of marine life including African penguins, cormorants, and a large colony of South African fur seals. As an apex predator, the Great White Shark plays a crucial role in the marine ecosystem, helping maintain the delicate balance of nature. Recent studies suggest that these fascinating creatures not only inhabit coastal areas but also undertake extensive migrations. Despite their significance, much of the White Shark's behavior and habitat remains a mystery. Virtually unchanged for millions of years, the Great White Shark has evolved to perfectly suit its environment. Unfortunately, the population of these remarkable animals has significantly declined worldwide. In October 2004, the Great White Shark was listed under Appendix II of the CITES agreement, leading to strict regulations on their trade. The effectiveness of these measures in preserving the species remains uncertain.
