Description: The African Elephant (Loxodonta africana) is the largest land animal on earth. In Africa, there are two subspecies: the Savanna Elephant (Loxodonta africana africana) and the Forest Elephant (Loxodonta africana cyclotis). The majestic Savanna Elephant inhabits the dry forests and savannas of Africa, standing nearly three meters tall and weighing up to 7.5 tons. Despite international bans on ivory trade, African Elephants are threatened by habitat loss and poaching.
