Description: The African Elephant (Loxodonta africana) is the largest land animal on earth. There are two subspecies: the Savanna Elephant (Loxodonta africana africana) and the Forest Elephant (Loxodonta africana cyclotis). The Savanna Elephant inhabits the dry forests and savannas of Africa. Standing nearly three meters tall and weighing up to 7.5 tons, it exudes an impressive presence. Illegal ivory trade has severely decimated the elephant population. Since 1989, the international trade in ivory has been banned, but habitat loss due to the expansion of agricultural areas continues to threaten the survival of these majestic creatures.
