Impressive African Elephant in its natural habitat (00016090)
Description: The African Elephant (Loxodonta africana) is the largest land animal on Earth and a symbol of Africa's wilderness. There are two subspecies: the Savanna Elephant (Loxodonta africana africana) and the Forest Elephant (Loxodonta africana cyclotis). The Savanna Elephant inhabits the dry forests and savannas of Africa, standing at nearly three meters tall and weighing up to 7.5 tons. Unfortunately, the ivory trade has severely depleted the elephant population. Since the international ban on ivory in 1989, it is primarily habitat loss due to the expansion of agricultural areas that threatens the African Elephants' survival.
