Description: The African Elephant, scientifically known as Loxodonta africana, is the largest land animal on Earth. In this stunning image, a majestic African Elephant is seen searching for water. The two subspecies, the Savanna elephant Loxodonta africana africana and the Forest elephant Loxodonta africana cyclotis, are native to the African continent. The Savanna elephant, standing nearly three meters tall and weighing up to 7.5 tons, inhabits dry forests and savannas. Despite the international ban on ivory trade in 1989, the elephant population continues to be threatened by habitat loss and poaching.
