Majestic African Elephant in its Natural Habitat (00016126)
Description: The African Elephant, scientifically known as Loxodonta africana africana, is one of the most majestic animals in the world. These huge mammals primarily feed on leaves, twigs, roots, and fruits. Standing at almost three meters tall and weighing up to 7.5 tons, elephants are the largest land animals. There are two subspecies of the African Elephant, the Savanna Elephant and the Forest Elephant. The Savanna Elephant inhabits dry forests and savannas in Africa. Ivory trade has significantly reduced the elephant population, but since 1989, international trade in ivory has been banned. The main threat to African Elephants today is the loss of their habitat due to the expansion of agricultural areas.
