Photo of the Barbary Lion (Panthera leo leo) (00011790)
Description: The Barbary Lion, also known as the Berber Lion or Panthera leo leo, was a fascinating big cat that once roamed the Atlas Mountains of North Africa. Unfortunately, this subspecies of lion became extinct in the wild in 1910. However, a few individuals were kept in zoos and by private owners. Nowadays, Barbary Lions have been successfully bred back, but the remaining individuals are no longer purebred.
