Female Barbary lion sleeping in South African research and breeding center

Description: The female Barbary lion, also known as Panthera leo Leo, peacefully rests in a research and breeding center in South Africa. This majestic big cat once roamed the Atlas Mountains and became extinct in the wild by 1910. However, a few specimens can still be found in zoos and private ownership. Successful breeding programs have preserved this species, though the current Barbary lions are no longer purebred.
